The Early Years

First National Bank officially opened its doors in 1934 with a capital balance of $50,000. The founding board of directors included F.A. Ende, John C. Halseme, Ferd W. Rabe, A.H. Albert, Edward Hirshfeld, C.V. Huenke, and Walter W. Grothaus. Seventeen original shareholders signed the organization certificate to launch the new bank. On November 1, 1934, Harry Komminsk joined the board following the passing of C.V. Huenke. Walter W. Grothaus served as the bank’s first president until his death in 1950.

Leadership and Growth

Ferd W. Rabe was elected to complete Grothaus’s term, and Elwood F. Day was appointed to manage daily operations. In 1951, Harry Komminsk was named president. By that time, the bank's capital had grown to nearly $190,000 with assets totaling over $2.3 million. After Komminsk’s passing in 1959, Elwood F. Day took over as president and led the bank until his retirement in 1971, during which time assets reached $9.3 million.

A New Era

James J. Jarvis stepped in to manage operations, while P.L. Komminsk was elected president in early 1971. His service was brief due to his passing in May that same year. Betty L. Komminsk then became president, serving until 1997. Under her leadership, assets grew to over $98 million and capital to $13.5 million. She oversaw the opening of branches in Wapakoneta (1992) and Sidney (1996), moved the bank’s main office in 1994, and acquired the American Budget Company in 1988.

Continued Expansion

Following Betty Komminsk’s passing in 1998, Dianne Komminsk was elected president and later served as Chairperson of the Board until 2017. She started the Botkins branch and increased assets to $128 million. In 2000, William R. Wente became president and remained in the role until 2020. His tenure brought significant technological updates and growth, including the opening of the New Knoxville branch in 2006.

Modern Banking

Today, under the leadership of Jerry S. Lehman, Jr., First National Bank continues to grow by focusing on customer relationships and embracing evolving financial technology. The bank has expanded from one office in 1934 to five locations and now holds over $49 million in capital and more than $440 million in assets.

Innovation Through the Decades

Over its 90+ year history, First National Bank has witnessed sweeping changes in technology—from handwritten entries and mechanical adding machines to modern digital banking. The adoption of ATMs, ACH transactions, online banking, Check 21, and mobile deposit has transformed how customers interact with the bank. As technology continues to evolve, First National Bank remains committed to meeting its customers' needs while staying rooted in the communities it proudly serves.
